Sometimes the experience of young people in NYC with community service can have a cynical edge, more about resume-building than engagement. There are abundant opportunities for students to give back. So, here, we urge parents to encourage ways for their kids to give back, but we also offer a reminder that community service is a vehicle for ingraining real values and a spirit of civic ownership in our students.
